Versatile Trenchless Construction
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a versatile steerable system and one of the most common trenchless installation methods, capable of installing pipelines and conduits below ground using a surface-mounted drill rig.
The rig sits on top of the ground, and we install a pilot rod along the alignment. Once the pilot comes out on the other side, we attach a reaming head to the drill rods. Then, we enlarge the hole until we can pull in the new pipe or conduit.
Benefits of HDD:
- Cost-effective due to minimal surface damage
- Simple setup
- Short drilling and construction times
- Straightforward technique
- Wide, versatile application range
INDOT I-69 Section 5
Midwest Mole first arrived on the site in June 2015, and completed our work in early 2019. This four-year run included all methods of trenchless construction including HDD, pilot tube boring, auger boring, and TBMs. If you worked for Midwest Mole during this time, it’s safe to say that you worked on the I-69 Section 5 project at some point.
Lincoln Memorial-Repair Water Main
Located in the heart of the nation’s capitol, the National Mall is an iconic place, visited by millions of people every year. The project consisted of installing over 17,000 linear feet of new HDPE pipe, with diameters ranging between 2″ and 12″, via HDD.
