Segmental tunnel lining is an efficient way to create a stable tunnel following a tunnel boring machine or hand mining operation.
As the TBM or hand mine shield advances the tunnel, crews erect either steel ring beams or wood lagging to support the tunnel. Once tunneling is complete, crews thread the carrier pipe through the tunnel lining and inject grout in between.
The tunnel lining creates a safe tunnel throughout the entire duration of the tunneling process until the final pipe is installed.
Benefits of Segmental Tunnel Lining:
Great for longer distances since there’s no friction
An ideal method for larger diameter tunnels
Can accommodate slight bends
Safe, fast method with low operating costs
