Segmental Tunnel Lining

Simple Tunnel Construction

Segmental tunnel lining is an efficient way to create a stable tunnel following a tunnel boring machine or hand mining operation.

As the TBM or hand mine shield advances the tunnel, crews erect either steel ring beams or wood lagging to support the tunnel. Once tunneling is complete, crews thread the carrier pipe through the tunnel lining and inject grout in between.

The tunnel lining creates a safe tunnel throughout the entire duration of the tunneling process until the final pipe is installed.

Fishers Drainage Tunnel

When INDOT decided to eliminate traffic signals along State Road 37 in favor of roundabouts, it meant lowering the road up to 10-12’ in some places. With such a dramatic change, the project called for drainage improvements, including a large diameter 2000’ tunnel to carry water from the new road to Shoemaker ditch.
